Canada’s Residential school system for Aboriginal children was an education, in order to minimize and weaken family ties and cultural linkages, and to indoctrinate children into a new culture-the culture of the legally dominant Euro-ChristianCanadian society, led by Canada’s first prime minister John A. Macdonald.
The residential schools were failures. The children persevered through an existence of poor living conditions, overcrowding, lack of education, forced labour, hunger, and punishment for speaking Indigenous languages. Survivors have shared their stories. The impact of these institutions must be recognized and acknowledged by all who live in this land. There were two residential schools located in the Atlantic region. The first one was in Sussex Vale, New Brunswick, that was in operation from 1787 to 1826. A well-known residential school in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, was in operation from 1930 – 1967. The schools were in existence for well over 100 years, and many successive generations of children from the same communities and families endured the experience for them.
